LANE CONFIGURATION

The proposed lane configuration along East 140th Street varies, including five sections with different typical lane layouts along the corridor.  These typical lane layouts describe the most common layout for sections of East 140th Street.  Some exceptions will occur, such as designated turn lanes at Coit Road, Aspinwall Avenue, South Waterloo Road, and Lakeshore Boulevard.  The proposed changes are intended to better balance the comforts of all users of the corridor – including pedestrians, transit users, and cyclists – while maintaining traffic flow for motorists.  The five main sections of the corridor are discussed below.

Note: The proposed lane configuration of East 140th Street may vary from what is currently described below. The graphics and the descriptions included on this website will be updated should any changes be formally accepted.

ST. CLAIR AVENUE TO COIT ROAD (SECTION 1)

Between St. Clair Avenue and Coit Road, East 140th Street is approximately 40 feet wide and currently includes two unmarked travel lanes in the northbound and southbound direction, as seen in the photo below.

Given the block from Saint Clair Avenue to Coit Road is only 360 feet long, East 140th Street shall maintain a 40-foot roadway width. A 14-foot right-turn-only lane will be provided for southbound traffic and a 14-foot travel lane will be provided for northbound traffic. The remaining 12-feet of roadway width serves as the through-left-turn lane for southbound traffic and the left-turn-only lane for northbound traffic. The typical section, shown below, depicts the final lane use along this section of the East 140th Street Corridor.

COIT ROAD TO ASPINWALL AVENUE (SECTION 2)

Between Coit Road and Aspinwall Avenue, East 140th Street is approximately 40 feet wide and currently includes two unmarked travel lanes in the northbound and southbound direction, as seen in the photo below.

The roadway width for most of this section will reduce from 40 feet to 36 feet. This is accomplished by moving the curb lines in by two feet on each side. In addition to narrowing the roadway, bike lanes are established. The final lane use will include one 11-foot vehicle lane in each direction, one 7-foot bike lane for northbound cyclists, and one 7 to 8-foot bike lane for southbound cyclists. The typical section, shown below, depicts the final lane use along this section of the East 140th Street Corridor.

ASPINWALL AVENUE TO DEISE AVENUE (SECTION 3)

Between Aspinwall Avenue and Deise Avenue, East 140th Street is approximately 40 feet wide and currently includes two striped travel lanes in the northbound and southbound direction. This section also traverses under the CSX Railroad bridge, as seen in the photo below.

East 140th Street shall maintain its existing width in this section. This includes the street segment under the CSX bridge structure, as the bridge is not being altered as part of the project. The 18.5-foot openings for each direction of travel will be reconfigured with a 1' shoulder against the central pier, one 11' wide vehicular lane, and one 6.5-foot wide bike lane. The typical section, shown below, depicts the final lane use along this section of the East 140th Street Corridor. In addition to the layout updates discussed above, the structural curb and railing approaching both sides of the CSX bridge will be replaced. Structural curb under the bridge will be patched with railing to remain.

DEISE AVENUE TO SOUTH WATERLOO ROAD (SECTION 4)

Between Deise Avenue and South Waterloo Road, East 140th Street is approximately 40 feet wide and currently includes two unmarked travel lanes in the northbound and southbound direction, as seen in the photo below.

The lane layout of this section of East 140th Street is consistent with Section 2 (Coit Road to Aspinwall Avenue). The roadway width for most of this section will reduce from 40 feet to 36 feet. This is accomplished by moving the curb lines in by two feet on each side. Bike lanes continue through this section.

SOUTH WATERLOO ROAD TO LAKESHORE BOULEVARD (SECTION 5)

Between South Waterloo Road and Lakeshore Boulevard, East 140th Street varies in width. The roadway is at its widest at 56 feet under Interstate 90 until McElhattan Avenue, and then tapers back down to 40 feet wide at Waterloo Road. The 40-foot width is then maintained until Lakeshore Boulevard. Two striped travel lanes are provided for the northbound and southbound direction under the Interstate 90 bridge from South Waterloo Road to Waterloo Road. North of Waterloo Road through Lakeshore Boulevard, East 140th Street includes one travel lane in each direction and a parking lane on both sides of the street, as seen in the photo below.

The existing curb lines in this section will remain in place, maintaining existing roadway widths. Between South Waterloo Road and McElhattan Avenue, the final lane use will include one 11-foot vehicle lane in each direction, one 10-foot left-turn-only lane in the southbound direction, one 7-foot bike lane in the northbound direction, and one 6-foot bike lane in the southbound direction. The remaining roadway width is hatched out along the curbline. Between McElhattan Avenue and Othello Avenue, the lane layout transitions to the primary configuration for this segment. North of Othello Avenue, 8-foot parking lanes are maintained on the both sides of East 140th Street. The remaining roadway width includes one 12-foot vehicle lane in each direction. The typical section, shown below, depicts the final lane use between Othello Avenue and Lakeshore Boulevard of the East 140th Street Corridor.
